The Risk Management Body of Knowledge (RMBOK) is a comprehensive guide aimed at unifying and synthesizing the fragmented literature in risk management. It began as a project in 2008 after Julian Talbot and Miles Jakeman, with the assistance of the Risk Management Institution of Australasia, published the foundational Security Risk Management Body of Knowledge (SRMBOK).
This project began as a response to the multidisciplinary nature of risk and the lack of a professional body of knowledge in the field. Despite advancements in risk management methods, there remains a significant gap in consensus on fundamental concepts and principles. Without a standard body of knowledge, risk management has remained a discipline rather than a profession.
The RMBOK will be published in 2024 with a third author, Jason Brown, former Chair of the international committee responsible for the ISO31000 Risk Management Standard. The publication is a joint effort of many organizations and hundreds of individual contributors. However, thanks to the Risk Management Institution of Australasia (RMIA) and the global Institute of Strategic Risk Management (ISRM).
No book can capture the ever-expanding body of knowledge of a profession; however, at 550 pages, the Risk Management Body of Knowledge (RMBOK) provides an integration of all that is known about risk. It provides a systematic collection of concepts, terms, and activities that constitute professional risk management.
The RMBOK is designed to be a focal point for risk professionals, offering a platform for discussing, developing, and disseminating best practices. Integrating international standards with peer-reviewed scientific research and practical experience is a foundation for enhancing the reliability and effectiveness of risk management practices.
